If you think of a “green” Toyota car you probably think of a Hybrid such as the Prius. While gas engines and electric motors are the common ways we build our cars and SUVs to make them more fuel efficient, there’s an additional way you may not have heard of. The 2021 Mirai offers you the equivalent of 76 miles per gallon by using hydrogen as the fuel. Yes, we said hydrogen and since the fuel storage tanks can handle 5 times the crash energy as steel and features methods to stop the flow of the gas in the event of a collision, it is as safe as any other Toyota.
The 2021 Toyota Mirai generates power in a way you might not be familiar with. A reaction between the hydrogen and air coming through the intake grille generates energy. An electric motor is fed that energy and produces 182 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. This system can provide the equivalent of 76mpg and a range of around 400 miles. Filling up takes only about 5 minutes and is done by a pump similar to one you would find at a normal gas station.
While it might be unique with power from the hydrogen, the Mirai is otherwise a normal car. LED headlights and taillights, 19-inch alloy wheels, a Smart Key, heated front seats, and automatic climate control are all standard equipped on the Mirai. 20-inch alloys, automatic wipers, cooled front seating, a digital rearview mirror, and a motorized rear-window sunshade are a few of the intriguing upgrades.
Each 2021 Toyota Mirai comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+. This impressive safety suite includes Lane Departure Alert, a Pre-Collision System (with Pedestrian Detection), and Road Sign Assist. A Cam with 360-degree views, and Front and Rear Parking Assist are notable options. Throw in Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa and your choices for entertainment on the 12.3-inch touchscreen will be nearly limitless.
